Basic information about the United Arab Emirates

• The United Arab Emirates is a Middle Eastern country located in southwest Asia in the eastern Arabian Peninsula, off the coast of the Persian Gulf
• The UAE is bordered by Oman and Saudi Arabia
• The Emirates consist of seven emirates:
  • Abu Dhabi
  • Dubai
  • Sharjah
  • Ras Al Khaimah
  • Fujairah
  • Ajman
  • Umm Al Quwain
• The capital is Abu Dhabi
• Currency: the UAE dirham - AED
• Population is just over 10 million (2020) - slightly less than the Czech Republic
  • 72% of the population is male
  • The largest part of the population is represented in the age range 25-54 years (66%)
  • most of the population lives in Dubai (36% and then Abu Dhabi 35%, then Sharjah 16%, the smallest emirate is Umm Al Quwain)
  • Emiratis are only about 11.5% of the population, with Indians (27.5%) and Pakistanis (12.7%) being the most numerous
  • the largest part of the population lives on the coast
  • over 90% of the UAE is essentially deserted
• The area is 83,600 km² (slightly larger than the Czech Republic, which has 78,871 km2)
• The president is Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan (ruler of Abu Dhabi)
• Prime Minister is Sheikh Mohammaed bin Rashid Al Maktoum (Ruler of Dubai)
• The main religion is Islam (76%), followed by Christianity (12.6%), then Hinduism, Buddhism and others
